Solutions to the frequent Hanging/Freezing of Nokia Lumia 520

Just few moments after publishing a post on how you can Exchange your old phone for a new Nokia Lumia 520, I received a message from a friend requesting solutions to the frequent hanging/freezing of her Lumia 520. After helping her with the problem,
I feel I should share it with everybody here.

If you have a Nokia Lumia phone and you are experiencing this same problem, these are my suggestions for you:

Option 1:

Some apps will occasionally slow down your phone, -- something that I have experienced on Lumia 820 and 510 --. So try to identify the app that is slowing down your phone and if the app is not of much importance to you, you may consider uninstalling the app. Also make sure that you don’t have too much apps running in background tasks which may lead to hanging.

Option 2:

If option 1 does not work, then you may have to do a Soft Reset on your phone. To do this, simply press and hold both the Volume down and the Power Keys for 15 seconds. Your phone will reboot.

Option 3:

If option 1 and 2 does not work, then you might consider doing a Hard Reset on your phone. To do this,
For Nokia Lumia 520 Windows Phone 7
  • Turn off your Lumia 520 phone
  • Press and hold the Volume down and Camera keys.
  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • When you feel the phone vibrates, release the power key, but keep pressing the volume down and camera keys, until the phone reboots. – All data will be lost!, so its recommended that you backup your data --.
For Nokia Lumia 520 Windows Phone 8
  • Turn the power off.
  • Press and hold the volume down and connect the charger, you will see an exclamation mark (!) on the screen.
  • Then press the following keys in the exact order:
  1. Volume Up
  2. Volume Down
  3. Power
  4. Volume Down
  • The phone will reset and restart. – This may take a few minutes, and all data will be lost --.
  • On the start screen, tap on this icon
  • Tap settings -> about phone
  • Tap reset your phone, then tap yes

Option 4:

If after trying the 3 options above and the problem still persist, I suggest that you return the phone to the Seller/Vendor and request for a phone swap (Provided that the phone is still new and your warranty permits that.).

I hope this helps.
Please feel free to drop your comments below, we love to hear from you.

  2. I would advice not to hard reset it as I tried that, my data got lost and the problem still persists. I am so sick of this phone. The only option left is to get a new phone. No more nokia for me thank you very much!
